How to stay on track while traveling

When trying to live a healthy lifestyle, I think we can all agree that traveling can make things a little bit more complicated. Over the years, I've learned how to take my healthy lifestyle anywhere! There's no reason to throw out everything you've learned because you're not at home.

Here are a few things that have made life on the go easier for me:

#1. Strive for progress, not perfection.

Trips should be enjoyable, whether they are for leisure or work. While you want to carry your healthy lifestyle with you on the road, don't strive for unattainable goals. Try to make healthy choices each day but don't beat yourself up if you indulge a bit or miss a workout. One day won't undo all of your progress. Just keep going.

#2. Have a plan.

When it comes to food, planning is key. If you're in the airport or driving, think ahead about healthier options.

Starbucks? Opt for a coffee with coconut milk and stevia instead of a sugar-laden drink with dairy. Breakfast? Grab an egg sandwich on a whole wheat english muffin or egg bites to start your day with protein.

Going out to dinner? Check the menu ahead of time to see what looks good and will keep you on track but still allow you to enjoy yourself. Also, restaurants are pretty accommodating. You just have to ask! I swap sides all the time for a side salad or steamed veggies, make it your own!

#3. Pack your workout clothes.

This one sounds simple but unless you pack your workout clothes...news flash, you're probably not going to work out. If it's important to you, there are all kinds of ways you can ensure you get your workout in.

One of the easiest things you can do is travel in your workout clothes. For example, when I have an early morning flight, I travel in my workout clothes to my destination. That way I have no excuses. As soon as I get to the hotel, I hit the gym.

If there's no gym where you're staying, get creative. Go for a walk or run outside, or do a HIIT workout in your hotel room. The PowHerFit membership has workouts you can take anywhere.

#4. Drink plenty of water.

In general, staying hydrated is important. It's even more important when you're traveling.

A good rule of thumb is to drink a half a gallon of water a day. One of the best ways to make sure you get enough water while traveling is to pack a reusable bottle. This helps cut down costs too because food and drinks in the airport, convenience stores and drive-thrus can add up quickly.

If you're flying, being in the air dehydrates you. Try your best to stay extra hydrated on days that you fly. Also, keep in mind that when dining out restaurant food has a lot more sodium than the things you make at home. That's another reason to keep your water intake up.

Most importantly, enjoy your travels wherever they take you. If you miss a workout or have one too many appetizers, it's okay! Tomorrow is a new day. Be kind to yourself and enjoy the journey. I hope these tips help you along the way!
